Alex Ishov enjoys the thrill of challenging expectations and widening comfort zones. Advocating for diversity in and out of the concert hall, he seeks to broker new connections between performers and audiences, integrating artists into their surrounding communities.
PERFORMS ON: Classic Model RH (similar to Vision RH)
Equally at home on stage, baking a sourdough loaf, or skiing through the forest, Alex Ishov finds inspiration for his work from a wide range of life experiences. As a flutist and sound artist, Alex balances his classical orchestral training with a love for constantly evolving modern music. His musical aesthetic has been influenced by a wide range of artists, which include Radiohead, Gustav Mahler, Kendrick Lamar, KNOWER, Dmitriy Shostakovich, Alla Rakha, Brad Mehldau, Vulfpeck, Steve Reich, Donny McCaslin, and J.S. Bach. He is also inspired by visual mediums, from Viennese architecture, to the experimental films of Stan Brakhage.
The son of a scientist and a filmmaker, Alex enjoys playful experimentation and problem-solving, and his projects are fueled by an inquisitive desire to unearth new energies. Constantly shifting his perspective, Alex is comfortable in roles of teacher-student, performer-educator, creator-consumer.
Raised by Russian parents, Alex spent his childhood between Philadelphia, PA, and St. Petersburg, Russia (but at least he’s upfront about his ties to Russia!). Through his cultural duality, he seeks for his artistry to portray a wide range of life experiences, world-views, political and social backgrounds. As a global citizen, he seeks to broker new connections between people, illuminating alternative sides in artistry and beyond.
Before relocating to San Diego, Alex was active as a freelance performer, teacher, and translator in the New York City area. Alex maintains an in-home studio, and is increasingly in demand as a flutist for remote recording work.
He is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Flute Performance and Contemporary Music at the University of California, San Diego, and holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Interlochen Arts Academy.
