Artist Bio

Zoltán Gyöngyössy (Hungary)


Zoltán Gyöngyössy is Professor of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Sciences in Pécs, Professor at the Ferenc Liszt University of Music in Budapest, and participates in many contemporary performances, radio and CD recordings. He is an active professional performing musician as a member of the ensembles Componensemble, UMZE and Intermoduláció. Additionally, he performs regularly with the Budapest String Ensemble, the Weiner-Szász Chamber Symphony Orchestra and the Erkel Chamber Orchestra.

Professor Gyöngyössy began studying music under Mária Apagyi (piano) and Mária Révész (flute) at the Zoltán Kodály Elementary School of Music and sang in the well-known school choir under Liszt Award winning conductor Ferenc Tóth. From 1972, he continued his studies at the Conservatory of Pécs under István Barth, and from 1976 under Henrik Pröhle at the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy where he graduated with honors in 1981. Subsequently he studied at the Carl-Maria von Weber Music Academy in Dresden under flute artists Johannes Walter and Arndt Schöne. In 1982 he was awarded a scholarship to IRCAM in Paris, where he worked together with Pierre-Yves Artaud and Robert Aitken.

He was Solo Flutist of the Europe Chamber Orchestra led by Claudio Abbado and initially a member of the Budapest Festival Orchestra as well. In 1993, he toured with Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt, Vienna, Berlin), and he formerly performed with Új Zenei Stúdió, which has since disbanded. Many contemporary composers have dedicated their pieces to him. He is a multiple Artisjus Prize winner and won the Liszt Prize in 1993.

Zoltán Gyöngyössy regularly takes part in the Bartók Festival headed by Péter Eötvös. He has performed on numerous recordings and has released solo recordings including: Romantic Music for Flute, Mozart: Sonatas K10-15 and Vivaldi: Concertos for Flute.
