Artist Bio

Javier Rodriguez (Venezuela)


Javier Rodriguez is currently studying with Philippe Bernold at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et Danse de Lyon and the former Principal Flute with the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra (TCYO) of Venezuela. He is a member of the National System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela, commonly known as “El Sistema.”  Despite his young age, he has had many opportunities for travel and has performed in several countries of the Americas and Europe.

Born in Maturín, Venezuela in 1992, Javier began his flute studies at the age of 10 studying with Efraín Barragán at the Jose Gabriel Núñez Romberg School of Music in his hometown city. At the age of 11 he won the position of Principal Flute with the Dr. Carlos Mohle Symphony Orchestra  and made his début as Soloist.  Since then, Javier has performed the Flute Concerts of Wolfang Amadeus Mozart (in 2005 and 2008), Aram Khachaturian (2006), Jacques Ibert (2011), André Jolivet (2011), Carl Reinecke (2011) and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (2012) as well as the works for two flutes by Domenico Cimarosa (2004), Antonio Vivaldi (2005) and Franz Doppler (2011). He has appeared with several young and professional Venezuelan orchestras such as Monagas, San Sebastian, Guárico, Ciudad Guayana, Teresa Carreño and Simón Bolívar.

In a time span of less than three years, Javier has been a prize winner in the most important flute competitions in Latin America: Second Prize of the II National Flute and Piccolo Competition for Young Soloists 2010, which led him to perform the World Premiere of Brasileirismos no. 2 of the Brazilian composer Hudson Nogueira with the Latin-American Woodwinds Orchestra in Manizales, Colombia; First Prize in the Competition of the First International Flute Festival in Caracas (2011) and recently in March 2012, the First Prize of the First International Flute Competition in Santiago of Chile.

 

Javier has attended numerous music festivals since 2004, participating in classes with well-known Venezuelan flutists Maria Gabriela Rodríguez, Jose Medina, Nicolás Real, Víctor Rojas, Javier Montilla, Pedro Eustache, Jose García-Guerrero and José Antonio Naranjo, as well as international performers such as Phillipe Bernold, Shigenori Kudo, Michael Hasel, Peter-Lukas Graf, Michel Bellavance, Alexa Still, Sarah Jackson, Hernán Jara, Davide Formisano, Mihi Kim and Kazunori Seo.

 

In 2006, Javier appeared in the Fourth World Congress "Talent of the Childhood" in Cuenca, Ecuador and earned the honor of being distinguished as "Young Talent of the Year" by the Monagas State Government (Venezuela).  In 2007, he performed with the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra as Principal Flute under the baton of Ulyses Ascanio, Eduardo Marturet, Pablo Castellanos, Diego Matheuz, Sir Simon Rattle, Rafael Frübeck of Burgos, Sung Kwak, Christian Vásquez, Gustavo Dudamel, among others, in the most important concert halls of Caracas. In the European Tour of 2010 as a member of the TCYO, Javier performed at BeethovenFest in Bonn (Germany), Vienna Konzerthaus (Austria), Berlin Philarmonic (Germany), Amsterdam Concertgebouw (Holland), Spain National Hall in Madrid (Spain) and the Royal Festival Hall in London (England).

At the age of 19 years old, Javier Rodríguez is an Active Member of the Young's Association of the United Nations, founder and active member of Opus 1 Flute Ensemble, and is finishing his last year of flute studies under the guidance of Andrés Eloy Rodríguez in both the Simón Bolívar Conservatory of Music and the Latin-American Flute and Piccolo Academy in Caracas.
