Dominique Kim (USA)

Former principal flute of San Diego Youth Symphony & Philharmonia and LaGuardia Arts High School Symphony Orchestra, Dominique Kim is currently pursuing dual degrees at Harvard University and New England Conservatory where she studies flute with Paula Robison. She recently graduated from New York City’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts after co-founding their Science Olympiad team, becoming a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, and winning 2nd place in the High School Soloist Competition at the 2012 National Flute Association Convention.

When Dominique started studying ballet and figure skating at the age of six, she enjoyed the musical aspect the most. Soon enough, she started studying the piano, then chamber music as part of a trio and quartet with her violinist younger sister. When she was tall enough, she chose flute as her orchestral instrument. Dominique expanded her enjoyment of chamber music by performing flute-piano duets and flute ensembles. Through her dedication to the art of playing the flute and piano, Dominique has earned Don Canepa Memorial Scholarship, H.B. Goodlin Scholarship, and graduated from Juilliard Pre¬-College where she studied flute with Bradley Garner and piano with Choong-Mo Kang as recipient of Mary Graham Scholarship.

Dominique’s past music teachers include, Dr. Ernest Barretta, Claude Monteux, George Katz, Dana Burnett, Tatiana Stignev, Demarre McGill, Brian Gordon, Jane Masur, and Dr. September Payne. She has also received masterclass instructions from Yoheved Kaplinsky, Timothy Day, Jeffrey Khaner, Carol Wincenc, Bart Feller, Jill Felber, Amy Porter, and Jim Walker.

In 2009, Dominique won first prize at the San Diego Symphony’s Young Artist Competition “Hot Shots” and performed as piano soloist with the University of San Diego’s Orchestra as part of the school’s 60th anniversary celebration.  Later in the same year Dominique made her flute concerto debut with the San Diego Symphony, and performed at Washington’s Kennedy Center. She has also performed flute and piano concerti with San Diego’s Civic Youth Orchestra and Young Artists Symphony.  Dominique was also featured at La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest 2009 & 2010 Galas, and during the live TV broadcast of “A Salute to Teachers” award show in 2008.  She has performed concerts during the La Jolla Music Society’s 2010 season, 2011 Ventura Music Festival, and at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and Paul Recital Hall, and has participated in Garner Flute Symposium, Vianden (Luxemburg) Music Festival, and Eastern Music Festival.

As a way to give back to her community, Dominique, along with her sister, has organized and performed dozens of concerts at various venues such as retirement communities, care centers and hospitals, and fundraiser events, including a special two-hour benefit concert for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Dominique is a big fan of ballet and opera performances, and was a member of the Student Producers of the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center.
