Alexander Ishov (USA)


Alexander Ishov enjoys the thrill of challenging expectations and widening comfort zones. Advocating for diversity in and out of the concert hall, he seeks to broker new connections between performers and audiences, integrating artists into their surrounding communities.

Recent engagements include Ensemble Signal at the 2017 June in Buffalo festival, and with the Eastman BroadBand at the soundSCAPE Festival. He has performed with the JACK Quartet, Irvine Arditti, Brad Lubman, and has coached with Steve Reich. His experience with 20th and 21st century music has included the works of Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, Unsuk Chin, Morton Feldman, Oliver Knussen, Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough, Wolfgang Rihm, and others.

He is equally comfortable as an orchestral flutist and piccoloist. In 2013, Alexander joined the National Youth Orchestra of the USA in its inaugural season, lead by maestro Valery Gergiev and featuring violinist Joshua Bell. Its tour included performances at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Grand Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, and at the BBC Proms in London. In 2016, he performed with the Eastman Philharmonia and Renée Fleming at Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

Raised in Philadelphia in a Russian-speaking household, Alexander enjoys his bilingual background. As a freelance translator, he recently collaborated with the George Eastman Museum to present films at The Nitrate Picture Show. Other interests include multimedia work, electroacoustic composition, and non-Western art.

Alexander has received degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Interlochen Arts Academy. Principal teachers include Bonita Boyd, Nancy Stagnitta, and Dr. Kristen Stoner. He is currently based in New York City.
